Flood Insurance Information
Floods can be destructive, damaging houses, belongings and a person’s sense of security. About 20% of flood claims in Georgia come from moderate- to low-risk areas. And while the state doesn’t require flood insurance, flooding could impact you. Flood coverage can give you peace of mind.
How Flood Insurance Works
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), flooding is the number one natural disaster in the United States. Flood insurance can protect you from the physical destruction and financial devastation caused by flooding.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) underwrites most flood insurance plans, but you may also purchase a policy from a private insurer, such as us. If your community participates in the NFIP, you may be able to purchase an NFIP plan. Major insurers and the NFIP Direct system usually sell NFIP plans.
NFIP flood insurance policies have two types of coverage:
-
Dwelling coverage—Dwelling coverage can provide financial protection from the damage that flooding can cause to the structure of your home, built-in appliances and attached structures.
-
Contents coverage—Contents coverage can protect your belongings, including your clothing, furniture and home decor, up to your policy limits.
Coverage may also be available for debris removal costs, loss avoidance and cost of compliance. Unified Insurance Agency can see if you qualify for this additional insurance.
How Can I Get Flood Coverage?
You can usually purchase flood insurance through your insurer. If a flooding disaster happens, you can get reimbursed for your covered losses—and unlike federal aid, you don’t have to repay it.
A flood insurance policy doesn’t take effect until 30 days after purchasing coverage. So if the Georgia forecast includes a flood alert for your area, it’s already too late to buy coverage. You can’t be insured just a few days before a flood.
How Is the Cost of Flood Insurance Determined?
Your insurance premium depends on your property and location in the state. We can help you determine what specific flood insurance offers the best coverage and if you’re eligible to purchase FEMA flood insurance.
